Nutritional Counseling and Follow-up

Nutritional Counseling and Follow-up

At New England Institute for Neurology and Headache, your diet is very important to us. We deal primarily with chronic, complex medical conditions, which are best approached with a holistic mindset. There is accumulating scientific evidence that diet and nutrition play a major role in conditions we like to treat, such as migraine, MS, ADHD, fibromyalgia, anxiety/depression, insomnia and chronic pain, to name just a few. Where there’s room for positive intervention, we want to help.

It’s no coincidence that SAD is the acronym for the Standard American Diet! The chemicals and processed junk most of us consume (think diet soda, MSG, and nitrates, for example) can both cause disease as well as worsen an existing condition. Good stuff, on the other hand (terms like “organic”, “free-range”, and “kale chips” appeal to us) can alter the trajectory of chronic illness, and make you feel great.

That’s where Nutritional counseling comes in! Nutritionists help patients become active participants in their health through positive dietary changes. Whether clients hope to lose weight, compete in a triathlon or manage a chronic illness, their eating habits and overall nutrition can mean the difference between failure and success. Nutritional counselors guide clients toward their goals by developing a plan that promotes healthy eating while taking into account each person’s unique health status and lifestyle. When you come in for a nutritional counseling consultation expect a 45-60 minute session. Follow-up visits last about a half hour. You can prepare by thinking hard about your diet, and even writing down everything you eat and drink for a few days. For the computer savvy, check out www.myfitnesspal.com or www.sparkpeople.com. Both sites are free diet and nutrition trackers, and both have handy apps for iOS and Androids. Bring questions, bring an open mind, and prepare to learn!
